Kitchen as we conceive it today, modular and organized in functional areas, started from the research made by Modernism on the organization of domestic interiors. In “modern” kitchens, as well as in the rest of the house, nothing is left to superfluous and the designer’s attention is focused on a proper, rational distribution of the basic functions, that in the kitchen are, ideally, those of preserving, washing, preparing and cooking foodstuffs.
At the beginning of the 19th century, speculation flourished on the logic, the ergonomics, and the “minimum space” for life in the house. Since then the way of living has changed, and the relationship between cooking and the space where it is carried out, as well as modalities of approaching to food, are diverse too. Today a deeper dialogue is explored in the kitchen, between people and their home, between food and soul. As we long for the fascination of everyday gesture, household rituals become more and more important.
